Sometimes, during our planned History Explorations, we make an unplanned Discovery. That was the case during our first Adventure on the first week of school. While we were headed for the Paducah Pictorial at the Post Office and Courthouse, we found a house that was once owned by Sam Houston and later used as a jail during the Civil War.
Sam Houston purchased this property in October of 1874. By 1875 his new Italianate home was built. Houston was one of Paducah’s leading attorneys at that time. When Houston passed away he left the home to his niece Pauline Houston Sevier.

In April of 1992 Paducah Bank bought the home and transformed the property into a small park. The brick room which served as an outside kitchen for the main house was preserved. According to local “historians” the brick kitchen was once used as a jail during the Civil War.

Green space is an integral part of every American city. By offering opportunities for recreation, reflection, and relaxation, green spaces improve community health and increase property values.

We found this great location while searching for a nearby Geocache. Many Geocaches are designed to increase awareness of the effort and investment in local green spaces by individuals and local businesses. It was a fun Discovery, 6/10.
